Privacy Policy

Jester ("we," "us," "our") is a meme search and discovery app. This policy explains what data we collect, how we use it, and your rights. We wrote this in plain language because nobody reads legalese.

What We Collect

Account information. When you create an account, we collect your email address and a hashed password. We use Supabase Auth to manage authentication. We never see or store your plain-text password.

Meme images you upload. When you upload a meme to your vault, we store the image in cloud storage (Supabase Storage). Your uploaded images are private to your account by default. If you choose to share a meme to the Explore page, that image becomes visible to other Jester users.

AI-generated metadata. When you upload a meme, we send the image to an AI service (Anthropic Claude) for analysis. The AI generates descriptive tags, categories, and search terms for your meme. This metadata is stored alongside your image to power search. The AI does not retain your images after processing.

Search queries. We process your search queries to return relevant results. We may use aggregated, anonymized search data to improve the product. We do not link search history to your identity for advertising or profiling purposes.

Usage data. We collect basic usage information like which features you use, crash reports, and performance metrics. This helps us fix bugs and improve the app.

Payment information. If you subscribe to Jester Pro, payments are processed through Apple's In-App Purchase system and managed by RevenueCat. We never see, store, or have access to your credit card number or payment details. RevenueCat receives a transaction receipt from Apple to manage your subscription status.

How We Use Your Data

We use your data to:

  • Operate the app (store your memes, power search, manage your account)
  • Analyze your uploaded memes with AI to generate searchable tags
  • Process payments for Jester Pro subscriptions
  • Fix bugs and improve app performance
  • Send you important account-related communications (password resets, service updates)

We do NOT use your data to:

  • Sell to advertisers or data brokers
  • Build advertising profiles
  • Train AI models on your private images
  • Share your private vault with other users without your explicit permission

Third-Party Services

We use the following services to operate Jester:

  • Supabase: Authentication, database, image storage (supabase.com/privacy)
  • Anthropic (Claude): AI image analysis for meme tagging (anthropic.com/privacy)
  • OpenAI: Text embeddings for semantic search (openai.com/privacy)
  • Google Cloud Vision: Image context lookup during analysis (cloud.google.com/terms/cloud-privacy-notice)
  • RevenueCat: Subscription management (revenuecat.com/privacy)
  • Vercel: Web hosting (vercel.com/legal/privacy-policy)
  • Railway: Backend hosting (railway.app/legal/privacy)

These services process data on our behalf under their respective privacy policies.

Public vs. Private Content

Your vault is private. Only you can see the memes in your vault.

Explore is public. When you toggle "Share to Explore" on a meme, that image and its AI-generated tags become visible to all Jester users. You can remove a meme from Explore at any time by toggling the share setting off.

When you save a public meme from Explore to your vault, we record that save. The original uploader cannot see who saved their meme.

Data Storage and Security

Your data is stored on servers in the United States. We use industry-standard security measures including encrypted connections (HTTPS/TLS), encrypted token storage, row-level security on our database (each user can only access their own data), and secure cloud storage for images.

No system is 100% secure. We do our best, but we cannot guarantee absolute security.

Your Rights

You can view all memes and metadata in your vault at any time through the app.

You can delete individual memes from your vault. To delete your entire account and all associated data, contact us at privacy@getjester.co and we will process your request within 30 days.

Contact us at privacy@getjester.co to request a copy of your data.

You control whether each meme is shared to Explore. You can remove any meme from Explore at any time.

Children's Privacy

Jester is not intended for children under 17. We do not knowingly collect data from anyone under 17. If you believe a child under 17 has created an account, contact us at privacy@getjester.co and we will delete it.

California Privacy Rights (CCPA)

If you are a California resident, you have the right to know what personal information we collect, request deletion of your data, and opt out of the sale of your data. We do not sell personal information. To exercise your rights, contact privacy@getjester.co.

Changes to This Policy

We may update this policy from time to time. If we make significant changes, we will notify you through the app or by email. The "Last updated" date at the top tells you when this policy was last revised.
